On her application for the scholarship, when asked, "Why are you considering the University of Alabama as your college choice?", she answered:

The University of Alabama hasl always been one of my top choices for several reasons. The University of Alabama has an excellent Honors College and I am very interested in the International Honors Program. I plan on majoing in both International Business and Spanish and the Honors College would be an excellent pathway for reaching my goals. When I toured the University, I met with the Dean of the Honors College, Dr. Robert Halli, and I was so impressed and inspired by all the accomplishments and opportunities he shared. After our meeting I actually sent my parents a text message that said, "Roll Tide." I knew at that point I was hooked on Alabama. Both my parents attended the University of Tennessee so convincing them this was the right path for my future has been a bit of a challenge but they are very supportive of the decision.

She has been a published writer in the Chattanooga Teen Scene and in her spare time worked as a lifeguard at Baylor Camp and Mountain Shadows Pool. Katie will entering the pre-med program at the University of Alabama.

She writes about her experiences as a student asthlete:

I found what it meant to compete against one's own body and mind. I had to learn how to work through stress, fear, and pain, and I discovered that the only way to do this was to work harder, suffer longer, and dig deeper. Because of cross-country, I know the strength and had work it takes to succeed.

Although I would receive both in-state tuition and scholarships for the University of Tennessee and have been offered scholarship money to attend the University of Georgia, I believe that the University of Alabama is a better choice for me. I recently read in an article posted on Forbes.com that The University of Alabama was ranked number seven on the CCAP National Public Universities Rankings. Also, I was captivated and inspired during the Capstone Scholars event ny the speaker who told of the many Alabama students who were members of the USA Today Academic Team. Although these students are only a few years older than I, they are making a huge impact on the world. I believe that through the University of Alabama I would be able to make a difference too.

My advisor and AP Calculus AB teacher, Mrs. Marti Wayland, an alumna of the University of Alabama Honors College, has served as my role model throughout my high school career. She has accomplished so much during her life including being an ordained preacher, working for the CIA, and being an AP Calculus teacher and AP exam grader. Mrs Wayland has lived a hugely successful life--she has had a major impact on my life and the lives of many others--and accredits much of her success to the University of Alabama."
