Dr. Karr speaks to Chattanooga Chapter
Dr. Chuck Karr, Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Alabama, spoke passionately to the Chattanooga Chapter of Alabama Alumni and Friends Club. Dr. Karr was describing the academic achievements of the University which creates enthusiasm among prospective incoming freshmen. Many folks do not realize that Alabama has had more USA Today Academic All Americans than any other college or University--even more than Harvard. According to Dr. Karr, there definitely is an increase the level of academic achievement of students enrolling in the University. This academic year, Dr. Karr said that of the 600 students who came into the Engineering program, 54% were in the top ten of their class and 38% had a 4.0 GPA or better. Dr. Karr got a laugh when he said that his wife told him that at this rate he would not be able to qualify for one of his classes.

Tyler Watts talks to Club
Tyler Watts spoke about athletics at Alabama. He said that Alabama is striving for excellence in all sports including gymnastics, softball, baseball, and basketball under Coach Grant in addition to its football program. Watts told the Club that it took us a while to get to the right coach, but the final results show Bama made the right choice. Tyler reminded the Club of the time when Alabama went 3 and 8, which was a horrible time. He said that fortunately, he had blown out his knee and felt that was about the only time when it was a good thing to be out of the lineup. Further, Watts told the club that after the '92 National Championship, the team and coaches celebrated for the next year. After the win on January 7th, in the dressing room, Coach Saban told the team: "Congratulations on your win, but your playing stunk." Tyler said that Coach Joe Pendry was meeting with the defensive line and pointing out what they had done wrong andwhat they need to do to get it right. They players responded, "Coach is this what we are going to work on in Spring Training or do we go out there now and practice?"

Alumni Representative Mark Roberts spoke of the sadness of the loss of Coach Mal Moore's wife. Mark pointed out the Coach Moore was aking that those who would like to do something to honor Mrs. Charlotte Moore, they make donations to the facility that did such a good job of caring for her. If anyone is interested, you may make donations to Caring Days, P.O. Box 3649, Tuscaloosa, AL 35403.
